I have been to every country on the Mediterranean... Politeness is the key... if you are they will be... I never had a problem getting along with out understanding the language... learn a few phrases and keep a good sense of humor... most people from other countries are just as frustrated as you in that situation... but it can be fun trying to learn to communicate... I have been invited into homes for meals by people I could not speak directly with... and spent all day communicating by sign laguage and phrase book... lots of fun.

yes, it can get very annoying, however you must be really apprecciative of the fact they're at least trying to speak your language and integrate into your culture. after all, a lot of english speaking people never learn another language or never try to communicate in a different accent so that they can be understood, so be grateful and who knows it;ll improve your picture drawing skills!

This happened to me the other day with this Cuban guy, he said something about eating cereal for breakfast, but the way he said cereal.. he kept having to repeat it, I felt so bad, almost like I had insulted him... I was so embarrassed

it depends on the accent. Some are harder to make out then others.
it's normal
but I have found that if you are really listening to someone you usually can make out what they are saying.
It might also help if you asked them to speak a little slower

it is kinda embarrassing, but at the same time, if you went to their country, you would have to resort to that.
