Mohandas Gandhi did many significant things in his life. He led many strikes and was arrested many times. He changed laws by going on food strikes until the British changed the law he wanted. In 1930 Gandhi led a strike on salt. After 10 years of limited compromise and repression by the British. Gandhi decided to lead a 24-day march to the sea to protest the British monopoly on salt. Soon millions around the country began to ignore the law banning home made salt. Gandhi was soon arrested as he so often was. On April 16, 1919 Gandhi lead another strike that lead all stores, shops, factories, offices, farms, railways, and 300 million people in India to a screeching halt.
After such a long time the British finally gave in granting India their independence.
Gandhi had many interests, but his favorite thing to do was spin. As India’s Father he declared that every person in India spin for at least a little every day. He made spinning an icon for India.

i'm indian...so
gandhi led many peaceful protests against the british government in india. people make fun of the fact that he wore loincloths-but he wore them for a reason. in the hindu relgion, there is a caste system. the lowest is considered the "Untouchables". the untouchables could only afford or were only allowed to wear loincloth type clothing-nothing fancy. gandhi wanted to help them and so he lived like them by wearing a loincloth and eating simple meals.
also, he did the Great Salt March. in india at the time, salt was a taxed product and it was illegal to make any. so he along with his followers marched hundreds of miles by foot to the ocean to make their own salt.
he was imprisoned twice (i think) but he never refused to fight peacefully.
P.S.
there was also a very remarkable thing he did that showed he was not a hyprocrite. a mother brought her boy to gandhi and asked gandhi to tell him to stop eating candy. this boy loved to eat candy and all sweet things. gandhi told the mother to leave and come back with the boy in a month.
in a month she came back and then gandhi told the boy that he should stop eating sweets. the mother asked why gandhi waited for a month and he told her that he was eating candy himself. he couldn't just be a hypocrite and tell the boy not to eat candy while he was. so in that month gandhi resisted candy.

I believe that Gahndi led the walk to get salt with his people in order to show the British that the taxes were not fair. He was quite a lot like Martin Luther king Jr, in using a non violent form of fighting. I am fairly certain that that was Gahndi.

He was a 'man of the masses'. During India's freedom struggle, he was able to motivate the populace to join him in his movement, that of non-violence & 'satyagraha'. He walked on foot to villages in rural India & instilled the fervour & passion of 'freedom' in the heart of the masses.
According to Gandhi-ji (as he is respectfully referred to), the poor, rural India was the 'real' India. And he was able to get them to follow him, believe in him - this 'mass appeal', is his major accomplishment, which ultimately was key in India achieving her independance in 1947.
