Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell...won the Pulitzer Prize, it's good (for 1024 pages or so, ha-ha)
Flowers for Algernon...sad but soooo good
Thomas Hardy....any one of his books, all depressing excepting Far From the Madding Crowd, which has a happy ending and is sprinkled lightly throughout with humor
Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms
J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye
I suppose you might already know this, but classics or books studied in high school English are usually very, very good. So read away!
Good luck with your reading!

"Les Miserables" by Victor Hugo
wordy, but beautiful story. I had to learn to skim which parts don't matter. It's my all-time favourite
also, "Princess" by Jean Sasson if you're into current events (its about Saudi Arabia)
both are amazing

I love anything by James Michner. But be warned, they are usually at least 1,000 pages and a tiny bit slow to start, but you won't be able to stop and you'll be wanting more when you're finished.
