I am a "first timer" (15 wks along) and i have an appointment to find out the baby's gender at 18 wks. Is this too soon? Friends and relatives seem to have waited much longer around 20+ wks.

I had an ultrasound done at 20weeks to determine the sex of my baby, and at 20 weeks everything was very clear especially the sex organs. However, 18 weeks is a good time as well, each baby is different and by then yours may very well be developed enough to see if it is a girl or a boy. And i'm pretty sure this won't be your last ultrasound, so if something different comes up the next time, you'll be informed.

The normal time span is between 18 and 20 wks, so that's normal. With the first I found out right at 18 wks, and this time I found out at 20 wks. It just depends on what your doctor wishes to do. I bet if you asked, you could get the appointment pushed back a couple wks, but you would need to find out soon since they tend to get booked up quickly. But I really think you'll be fine. And if you have any ultrasounds after that (some do another after 25/30 wks), then they will still be able to confirm gender just to put your mind at ease about the first ultrasound. Good luck, and congrats on the baby!

Usually they like to wait until you are 20 weeks at least. The sex organs haven't even fully developed at 18 weeks. I would call and ask if you can move it back a few weeks. I can't wait to have mine!! It's scheduled for the 30th, and I will be almost 22 weeks then. I wish they could do it sooner, but they are all booked up, you would think for me they could arrange something, but now I'm just a regular patient. Oh well!!

I was over 20 weeks when I had mine done. I didn't wait that long by choice but because the Radiology department was booked. It worked out great we got to see "her". When I was about I was almost 28 weeks when I had the elective 3-D/4-D ultrasound done and it was the prefect time we got to see her again! Good luck!

I know people who've been lucky enough to find out at 16 weeks.

They say 20 because it's pretty definite that the parts will be visible and what not but at 18 weeks, they are there so good luck!!!!! (and hoping your baby is a flasher so you can find out!)

My doctor told me around 16-20 weeks is usually a good time to get the first glimpse. My sonogram was at 18 weeks. We would have been able to tell what we were having if the little booger would have cooperated with us and shown us!
