Since you are in Ohio, check out Ohio University, in Athens, It has one of the top journalism schools in the nation. The degree is called a Bachelor of Science in Journalism degree.

The pay for beginners is average, but if you are really good, then you begin to make serious money within 5 years. There is a need for people in various aspects of the field: writers, art directors, graphic designers, marketing strategy people, account executives, and more. The growth of the internet as an ad medium has opened many opportunities for people in this field.

By the way, it's a myth that you need to be in NY, Chicago or LA to be in the "big time" of advertising. Today, some of the top ad agencies are now located in places such as Minneapolis, Miami, Boston, San Francisco, and even such "small towns" as Richmond, Virginia -- home of The Martin Agency, which employs well over 300 people, and just picked up the Wal-Mart account. (Its work for Geico and many other brands is well known.) The reality is that any fair-sized town (Cincinnati, Columbus, Cleveland, Toledo, etc.) will have ad agency jobs that are rewarding.

If you are creative, you will find a lot of opportunity in advertising. Go for it.

Hi, I'm in HR. Advertising execs and people in the field have degrees in Communications initially, and advanced degrees in Marketing and Communications. This field is highly competitive and there are only a few cities in the country where there are a lot of job opportunities for it. You would need to be in NYC (very expensive) LA or Chicago, in particular. There are thousands of interns coming to each of those cities each year to try and get into advertising firms. So if you are serious, not only do you have to go to a good school, get fantastic grades, but get internships and work experience while you are in college in some related offices. Then you should be willing to pay your dues and you'll have to be financially able to live in one of these places while you don't make any money. That's if you want to work in advertising, if you would be happy in marketing, where they do PR and other things for companies all over the US, you can live in more places and jobs are more abundant and a little bit less competitive. The pay is good, once you make it, and the hours are also long. Good luck.

You can go to pretty much any school if they have marketing/advertising. Ohio State University lets you create your own major pretty much depending on what courses you take (this is what my BF told me, since he went there).
