IN fact, many species have their whole DNA mapped out, and the human project, named Genome, is almost completed too.
DNA is a sequence of genes, and these genes contain all the chemical instructions that create a being, whether human, animal, or plant. Its basically a recipe for life.

Not only is it a unique 'blueprint' found in each cell of a living thing that stores all it's past history, but it also has information and instructions a cell or the organism needs to repair or replace, including any maintenance necessary to survive.
