British English is the language spoken in the United Kingdom - as in i suppose 'the queen's english'. American English is a derivative that the American's use after they kicked us out during the American Revolution all those years ago.
Some examples are spelling differences, e.g. colour (BrEnglish) and color (AmEnglish), favourite (BE) and favorite (AM), centre (BE) and center (AE). Also, Americans say 'chip' when Britons say 'crisps' and 'jelly' when we (British) say 'jam'.
