Check out department stores (including their clearance racks) along with discount stores. I never spent more than $30 on a prom dress and I always looked killer. Check out consignment shops, TJMaxx, Marshalls, etc.

--Buy a dress at least 3 months before. You want plenty of time to find the perfect dress.
--Buy the dress when you find it, or at least put it on layaway. If you wait to buy it, somebody else can snatch it up. Also, if you need to have it altered, the tailor will need time to do that. Some require weeks in advance.
--Try your dress on with heels similar (or exact if you have them) to the shoes you will be wearing. That way you can tell how the dress falls and how the length is, and you can see if you will need it hemmed.
--Make hair and nail appointments 2 weeks (or more, depending on the popularity of the salons you will be going to) in advance. Go over hair styles before the appointment to make sure that they are do-able (considering your hair length, the complexity of the style, and the ability of the hairdresser). I recommend getting your nails done first. It's easier to mess up your hair than your nails, and it's much more noticable.
--Don't forget extras: gloves, jewelry, makeup, underwear (hey, it is a special night), purse, etc. It sucks to realize that you forgot something at the last minute.

Those are all great reasonable stores to buy a dress, but you left out Dillard's! Dillard's is soo affordable, but they do not sell cheap ugly dressed @ all. You can get a really nice dress for around 100-125, and that leaves money left to do nails, and hair..
Some sites i recommend are www.Proms.net , www.promplus.com and www.yourprom.com...Have a great time!..Proms are SO fun!
