What was the significance of the second Ku Klux Klan?

This is NOT a racist question, people! It's for an assignment and I just need to know if it was significant to any part of American History other than the fact that they were the most brutal racist group ever.

The kkk that reemerged during the 1920's was different from the original klan founded right after the civil war. While still very much against blacks, the klan of the 1920's focused much of their attention against Jews, Catholics and newly arrived immigrants from Eastern and Southern Europe. They believed the Jews were taking over the country and the Catholics and immigrants were ruining the American way of life. They also believed these "inferior" people would contaminate the blood of "true" Americans.

The insanity in this argument is that to most people, the true American way of life is built on many different cultures joining together to create a new one

They were also essentially a pyramid scheme that let in everyone.
You paid a fee to get in, that went to the people who recruited you. When ytou got new members in they paid you, a portion went up from there.
There are many instances of Jewish, Black, Catholic, and other minority members.
