My daughter always lay with her head to the left and I used to get so worried that her head would become mishapen!
I think its just what the baby prefers there is nothing wrong. When he starts to roll over and become more active it won't be a problem anymore.

Yes my 6 month old son always looked to the right. One day I noticed that his ears were in two different places. His head is shaped crooked. We had an MRI to check for problems. He was diagnosed with Torticollis. We went to physical therapy to stretch the neck. Now he can look both ways. Next we are going to have to get a helmet for his head to reshape it! The earlier you figure it out the better. The doctor says that it is best to get the helmet on at 4 months. You should consult your pediatrician-have them refer you to a specialist. Time is very important in this matter. In the mean time-look at the baby's head from the top. If you notice it is starting to look mishaped-try seeing if he will sleep on his left side some. Look up Plagiocephaly and Torticollis on a search engine-there are a lot of sites full of info. Don't waste time getting to the doc-you could have to wait a month for an appointment with a specialist. Email me if you have any other questions.

Its something that is so common. If you look at other children his age you will notice the same thing. Some babies have a bald spot on the back of there head where they lay, my daughter had less hair on one side than the other because she used to always sleep on one side. Don't worry your son is normal and I'm sure he will be fine.

I think that most babies pick a side they look to more. I would say by 12 weeks if there were really a problem it would show up by then. Does your baby watch an object when it is passed in an arc across his line of vision? Try this and you can also lay him down in a different direction to see what he does.

Yes. It was very minor in my son, but there are some excercises that you can do to help him. He may not like them, but it works. These can be done at diaper changes. Gently, press head from ear to shoulder and hold for 10 secs. Do both sides even though only one side is affected. Then gently turn head to each side for ten secs (like he is going to look over his shoulder.) Also, you can switch which end of the crib you lay him down at each nao. And when playing sit on the side that his head is turned away from. This will make him want to turn his head to look at you.

i work with a lady who's baby did that. the baby would not look to the left what so ever. the doctor's said that he might have been in a weird position that put pressure on the muscles in his neck for too long while he was in the womb. they tested his vision and got him glasses also. the day he got his glasses the baby looked at a toy that was on his left side. now he has outgrown the glasses and everything is fine.

My son was the same way and my doctor just told me to keep trying to get him to look the other way. He said that I should sit on his left and put his toys and a mirror on his left. He also said that a few times a day I should "force" him to turn to his left by gently turning his head and holding it there for a about 15 seconds.

my sisters baby is nearly 14wks and the doctor said that to her week after week...quite frightening for first time mum! ive never heard of it and have 3 kids but 12, 11 and 5 years old and so much has changed...really quite surprised how much!! anyway turns out its one of those checklist things like turning over by a certain age. drs need to back off a bit i think...youve got enough to worry about without them adding to it. my niece is now turning her head both ways but still favours one direction to the other (and to quite a ratio!) try not to worry too much. just tell them he is too busy working out how to walk in next 2 weeks so will prob figure out the rest when he has time!!

This just came up in a family discussion last week. My sister-in-law had something like that when she was born. There is a name for it but I forget. It was quite normal and she turned out fine. There are many pictures with her head titled to the left.

That's called "Tonic Neck Reflex" and is perfectly natural. All babies have it and it will disappear with age. Don't worry about it, but do try to make sure he's not looking over there full time, as with his soft bones, it could make for a flatter spot on his head.
