ATTENTION TEACHERS.... Have you had a Methods of teaching course?

Question

I am currently enrolled in college as an elem ed major and am taking a methods course,,,, can you tell me what I am suppose to be learning?

My teacher is an idiot and I would like to know what I am suppose to get from this class.

You are supposed to be learning how to teach that subject. If you are taking Methods of Teaching Science and Math, you should be learning the material you will be teaching (basically a review of the material) and the best ways to teach it. My methods teachers for both that and Methods of Teaching ELA were awesome. We learned a lot about hands-on teaching and actually did those lessons in the class. We also worked a lot with groups to come up with lesson ideas for teaching a particular topic. Then, each person in the class would have a huge pile of lessons for different subjects by the end of the semester. I hope your class becomes more productive soon!

In my methods courses, we did not learn the material that we are supposed to teach. They expected us to learn that before we entered the program. What we learned was methods for teaching the subject, and some ideas for learning activities.

I'm in an "inquiry-based" B.Ed program. We have a "Curriculum Content and Contexts" course that is six hours each week for one semester. We learn nothing. We haven't learned a single teaching strategy. All we do is chat and talk about what we're going to chat about the next lesson. Sadly, I learned more in a four-week CELTA course than I did in a two-year B.Ed program.

Welcome to the Education Department of many institutions. Not saying people are lazy, or incompetent; however, there are very few teachers who actually feel their methods course taught them anything. Student teaching is really the Methods to teaching.
