It loaded the patches and then a screen game up that had recent WoW news and a play option. I clicked play and it took me to the site where i tried to log in. But it restarted and started dowloading the patches again! what do i do?

There are probably more patches you need to download. Just be patient. If it keeps downloading the SAME patch, contact Blizzard.

There are 2.5 GB of patches latched on to the original installation of World of Warcraft and 1GB of content updates in World of Warcraft Burning Crusade.

It all depends on what version you have, because we are up to 2.0.10 now, if you have lower versions than that, it will keep patching until you're up to date. It's annoying that it doesn't download it all at once yes, but keep letting it download them until it gets fully updated, then you will be able to play.

It's not supposed to take you to a site, its suppoded to take you to the game window where you login. Look for the Blizzard Downloader window, it may still be downloading.
