It could be an infection, or spyware as others have suggested.
But, could it be your antivirus program? My computer kind of freezes for several seconds the first time I open up my internet explorer browser. When I look at a list of running processes I see that my virus program is hogging a huge percentage of memory during this time. Probably initializing it's real time protection since I am getting ready to surf the net.
Five minutes sounds a little long though.

You are infected with Spyware. Whenever you connect to the Internet, the spyware is trying to download the latest information and update itself to pester you.
There is an article at;
http://www.goitexpert.com/entry.cfm?entry=Make-SpyBot-run-automatically
that shows you how to use a free utility to get rid of spyware and to automate the scan so that you don't have to manually remove the spyware infections.

The first operation that you should do is "scan" your computer for spyware y malware. If your PC is infected, and do not have the tools to clean it, download the following: "http://www.spybot.info/ "and use it to clean your PC of all this infection.
After the cleaning operation, you should check for errors in your PC, and you can do it this way:
1.-Click in "Start".
2-Click in "MY Computer".
3.-Right click in the local hard disk, if you have two disks, you will have to repeat this operation.
4.-Click in "Properties", and click in the "Tools" tab, in "Error checking" click in "Check Now".
After you finish the Error checking procedure, repeat the same secuence until #4, but do the "Defragmentation" instead.
You will see the difference in your PC.

Because you have become so infected with viruses, spyware, and other malware due to your indiscriment browsing in dirty sites such as porn sites and downloading stupid screen savers, unneeded software, wall paper, icons, smilies, and other junk your computer is now an infested mess.
People continually engage in poor behavioral choices and then whine about the consequences. Listen, clean up your system by first scanning with a virus/spyware scan, install and keep updated an Internet Security Suite, then open your browser and go to:
Tool-Internet Option-under browsing history click on Delete, then delete all temporary files. Then click on Settings right beside the Delete button and set your system to delete all temporary files when you close your browser.
Next, go to Start-All programs-Accessories-Tools, then click on Disk Clean and Disk Defragmenter. Use the defragment tool first, follow the instructions on the wizard, then click on Disk Clean and delete everything it shows as deletable. This will finsih up after a reboot so don't be alarmed when you reboot and a blue screen reports on its progress.
Now, most people have a ton of unused programs sitting on their hard drive. Studies have shown that individuals use 10% or less of installed programs. To properly clean up your system and help speed things up you need to clear out the junk programs you never or seldom use.
First, go to your All Progams list and hover your mouse over programs you never or seldom use. Often there is an uninstall option on the menu. Use that program to uninstall as many of these unused or seldom used programs as possible. If you see programs you seldom or never use which do not have an uninstall routine, go to:
Start-Control panel-Add/Remove Programs. A alphbetized list of installed programs will open. Browse these programs and determine which you never or seldom use. If you are unsure of what a program is or does, go to Wikipedia and look it up. Some of these programs are used by the OS. or hardware hooked up to your system. You do not want to accidently remove something you actually need but don't actually use yourself. Also, some programs come as a bundled suite, such as Microsoft Office or Microsoft Works, so don't remove anything with that name. If unsure leave it be.
Now, you need a great little tool called CCleaner, which is a cool program which will help keep your system clean, lean and fighting mean. It is also FREE!! It has a software removal tool, a Cookie Management tool, a Disk Cleaner, a Startup Manager,, and a Registry Cleaner. all very simple and easy to use. Go to:
http://www.cnet.com/downloads
In the upper right hand corner is a search box, type in ccleaner. This will pull up a page with a few like utilites, scroll down to ccleaner and click on the name which is a link to the actual downlaod page. Once at the download page read some of the reviews of users if you like, all will say what a great tool this is, then download and install the utility.
Once it is installed a link will be provided which will take you to the beginners guide. It is a simple and easy to read guide as the tool is simple and easy to use, but very powerful and very usefull, I highly reccomend it to all computer owners.
Once you have read the usage instructions go use it. First use it to finsih cleaning up the programs on your hard dirive, and never use the Add/Remove applet again as this tool is much better at removing software and leaves behind much less of a mess. The Add/Remove applet often leaves behind program file fragments, orphaned files, icons, and other peices of junk that clutter up the system and slow it down dramaatically.
Then go to the Cookie manager and place the cookies you wish to keep, such as for Yahoo! Inc on the right side. Once you have done this, go to Cleaner, and run it. After you have ran that, go to Issues and scan. Click Fix Selected Issues and a window will pop up asking if you wish to back up the Registry, click yes, then click Save in the window, and then finsih up by fixing all issues. Once you are finished run the tool again until it stops bringing up issues. As this is the first time you have used it AND your system is a mess you may have to run it three or four times to come up clean. Each time you remove a program run this immediantly afterwards to clean up all the fragments.
Now, stop browsing dirty sites, stop downloading every file which looks interesting, stop opening attachments without first scanning with your virus tool and stop installing software you never use. You should defragment your hard drive every six months unless you continue to go to those sites I reccomended you avoid, then do so every week. Run the CCleaner once weekly also if you continue with your bad habits.
Good luck and I hope you are able to salvage your system. If you still have these problems after following these steps you have ruined your system and either need a new one or reformatt your hard drive and reinstall your OS. Make sure you do a clean install, as that will clean off every horrid skanky virus, spyware, and malware you currently have currupting your lovely system. Poor system......
