Conscientious Objectors were men of strong principle. I know, for my uncle was one such. He didn't have a 'cushy' war however. He was out, night after night after night with the fire service, dodging the bombs of the blitz, fighting the many fires started by the bombing. Other COs did things like driving ambulances at the front, to collect wounded soldiers. They were certainly treated better than in WWI, being given an opportunity to state their case, being heard fairly, rather than just being slung into jail and given white feathers as happened in the earlier conflict.

consciencious objectors are always treated with suspicion and belittled by draft boards, induction personnel, and people whom they run into in places like bootcamp.

Cassius Clay, Mohammad Ali, got the status claiming that Islam was a religion of peace.
