I think it's taking a backseat to vampire/paranormal stories, for sure.

NO genre is overdone - although there are plenty of hacks out there writing in every genre. As long as new and fresh authors keep coming up with new angles, the genre will survive. Christopher Moore is one reason the horror genre has a future. He has found that angle and he is brilliant. Check out his new book You Suck.

Horror novels can still be exciting, but as you say, there are too many hacks, like sadly, Steve King who makes a lot of mistakes in his manuscripts. At the beginning he was great, but after "The Shining" he wrote too much and boring.

Same thing with all authors who were good at the beginning and, ugh, they were boring at the end. New writers have to try to make new things for horror novels since everything has been done.

Absolutely not.

Somebody will come along and breathe life into again, just like somebody does for everything.

If you ask me, right now quite a few genres are stale and begging for new, good authors, Mystery, Sci-Fi, and Fantasy for sure.
