Emo is a genre of music that was really called 'emotive hardcore.' This genre of music was popular in the late 80s and early 90s. It died out in the 90s, but pop/punk bands with lyrics that have meaning are still labeled emo today, even though they're not emo.

Emo is a genre of music, with emotional lyrics and affiliated with a non conformist attitude. They are scapegoated by many music aficionados for their ironically conformist style of dress, cookie cutter lyrical content, and lack of musical creativity. It is widely accepted that bands like The Promise Ring, Jawbreaker, and most importantly Rites of Spring started the genre, although none of these bands sound like the emo bands of today.

The term Scream-o has been coined to describe emo bands who employ the sing/scream style of vocals. Screamo, much like emo has "sold out" and become a genre saturated in carbon copied bands.

There have, however, recently been bands who have tried to reinvent the Rites of Spring style of emo, that is, a type of emo considered emotional not because the lyrical content describes the singers latest breakup, but emotional because the band is so in tune with their instruments and the raw energy of music. Cookie cutter (scr)emo bands include, Escape the Fate, Lovehatehero, Silverstein, Atreyu, Emery, Roses are Red, Greeley Estates, Senses Fail etc...
Do not mistake a lack of originality for a lack of talent, some of these bands are technically superb and gifted at creating melody, but their styles are all very similiar.

"Original" (Scr)emo bands would include Envy, City of Caterpillar, The Coma Recovery, The Saddest Landscape, Hot Cross, Saetia, Orchid, Braid, American Football, The Fall of Troy.

All the music sounds the same, all the bands look the same, and the guys seem to make a big deal out of how they wear girl pants.

emo's are people who are always depresed which pretty much sucks because one day they will lead their life to death (if your depresed talk to someone or punch a punching bag)

that i'm not one. if they don't wear makeup or constantly black and tight clothes, sometimes (ONLY SOMETIMES) are they hot. they are too emotional and suicidal for me. they make themselves into a stereotype then cry about how much their life sucks and how people judge them... and then kill themselves. basically, that's the jist.
