brick is coming back as a modern look for a house- it looks like a nyc loft apartment- butif you want something more moderd I'd suggest painting it. you can also tile a fire place I've seen it done with travertine and it looks really cool.

I would use thin stone, you can spread mortar right over top of the brick and then lay the stone in like tile. It makes it look like a stone fireplace and you can't tell the difference. There should be a place near you that carries this. In CT the store is called ThinStone, other places it is stone veneer.

Try a company called Mantels Direct, they're online and they provide measurement template and lots of styles to pick from. You measure, pick a style, and they ship. Comes in a few pieces, easy to put together...order hearthstone and surround from them as well....attach with thinset mortar to brick if its in good shape, otherwise go over with durock first.
may sound like an ad, but I had a hideous old brick fireplace with a cheap mantel.....looked around for a lot of ideas, but mantels direct was pretty easy, shipped to me in about 3 weeks....not cheap stuff either, will cost you @1k give or take .
