Not the river or the rainforest. I'm in an arguement with a friend and we can agree. She says they're just a myth. And cause i just HAD to oppose her i said they were real. Someone tell me I'm right so i can finally win an arguement with her!

The Amazons (in Greek, Αμαζόνες) were an ancient nation of female warriors or a society dominated by women, at the edges of Scythia in Sarmatia (Herodotus). The histories and legends in Greek mythology appear to have a factual basis in warrior women among the Sarmatians; this society of female warriors seem to have had their roots in very early eastern Bronze Age. This stands in stark contrast to other women in classical Greek society, who were expected to be passive and dependent on males. Today the word Amazon is often used to describe women who are physically strong, tough, mentally capable, and/or independent minded (see butch, Amazon feminism).

Sadly for you, the Amazons of Greek legend were, from all the currently known archaeological and historical evidence, a myth.

This said, I do recall reading that women in the Hittite empire would fight in combat - this could be an inspiration for the Amazon myth - my knowledge of the Hittites is fairly sparse, however, so I would certainly defer to a Hittiteologist regarding the veracity of this statement.

YES!!AND RECENT ARCHAEOLOGICAL FINDINGS MAY HAVE A "dna" genetic lock on QUEEN HIPPOLYTA HERSELF WHICH WAS TACED ACROSS SUCCESSIVE GROUPS OF "HORSEPEOPLES" TO THE STEPPES OF MONGOLIA to an individual girl with blonde hair and blue eyes ,this alone is very remarkable in a land of asiatic modern horsepeople ;but remarkablly she in a genetic mirror of this warrior qeen found in a tumulous burial at the western shores of the black sea where HIPPOLYTA AND her surviving women warriors were supposed to have drifted after commandeering and killing the greek crew of JASON'S men who were returning them as slaves and captives to greece!!they escaped and joined with a sexually diverse tribal grouping and mixed with them as they were horsepeople too!!the DNA match established at the end of this trail of cultures is better than if the MONGOLIAN GIRL WERE HIPPOLYTA'S DAUGHTER as there doesn't seem to be another genetic admixture from even a paternal line and this after more than 10,000 years of very violent crossing on the steppes of the huns, the golden horde, genghis khan's armies and the sweeps of alexander the great as far as india!!although the archaeologist is not absolutely sure of the specific identity of the warrior queen ,the mongolian girl is an excellent horse woman and their bone marrow and genetics are an exacting record that can't be topped !!the amazons live through her!!
