“The Bear” by Chekhov
“The Bear” by Anton Chekhov is a sweet, inspiring and humorous play. The play demonstrates the nature of human relationships, and how close anger and love are in a relationship between a man and a woman. I particularly enjoyed the scene where Popova is rudely awakened to the fact that her late husband owed money to this Bear. The interesting aspect is that he says as an aside "How angry am I!" as if analyzing his emotions in the third person. Well. they end up kissing and he manages to woo Popova. At the end of the play, there's no more giving the horses oats.
Quite a hilarious play, it has been adapted to screens too. One of my best Chekhov plays together with The Proposal. Quite funny plays. I've given presentations about it and translated into other languages. Great one act play.
Thanks.
