All sorts of things. You could use one in place of using a switch to directly connect two NICs. You could use one to connect two switches together that don't have uplink ports. What fun!

You use crossover cables to connect computers to each other, not to a Router. Here, go check out the Belkin website and search for some information:

A cross over cable transposes the +ve and -ve paths for the network traffic. This allows two network cards to talk directly to each other. Without wishing to be rude, I would suggest that if you don't know what it does, then you would have no use for one. You have to get deep in the network weeds to gain any benefit.

If you want to connect a computer to a computer without using a hub/switch otherwise you won't need it.

NOTHING IF YOUR NOT A NETWORKING PERSON. YOU USE THEM TO CONFIGURE ROUTERS AND OTHER NETWORKING DEVICES. IT WILL NOT WORK TO ACCESS THE INTERNET.
