just exactly what it says

Painting is poetry that is visual (silent)
and poetry a verbal painting. They are both forms of expressing art and/or emotions.

Like what somebody else said "a picture has a thousand words." Each individual has their own interpretations of what a picture is and what it symbolizes. Basically if a thousand people summed up a picture in word, it's possible that every word would be different based on the view and background of the viewer.

And words creatively used, can paint a picture in the minds and imaginations of those who read the words. Some of the most descriptive words can bring more vivid pictures to mind then any artist ever could.

painting is silent because it doesnt have any words but it has some thought to convey like poetry. on the other hand poetry has words[speaks] which explains some genuine rhythm and great theme like painting.the only big difference is of words i.e. in poetry the theme is more explicit as compared and in painting we have do some effort to guess the theme.

This is the doctrine of "ut pictura poetis"--poetry as a speaking picture. It has been a very influential in European poetry; basically it treats poetry as an attempt to "paint" an image in the reader's mind. It has led to a lot of image and figure rich poetry, from Ovid to Keats. I personally don't much care for the idea--I tend to prefer poetry that has a strong rhythm and sounds almost musical. But to each his or her own.
