I have a Compaq Presario notebook, it's about three years old, Windows XP SP2, AMD Athalon 64 bit processor, and either 256 or 512 MB RAM (I forget which). Will an increase of RAM make much of a difference- and if so, how much will it take to make that difference? What exactly will be improved with the increase of RAM? I use it mostly for internet, word processing, occasional gaming, photo editing and some light a/v editing.

Ram will improve the performance but only slightly. Especially if its the first (256Mb.) You will improve the performance with a faster processor. You will have to investigate what is the largest CPU for your computer and have the largest L2 cashe. You can also bump the page file up to Custom, 2048 for the low, and 4096 for the high setting.
Make sure your HDD is less than half full, and defragment your HDD about every week. For the ram you can go to http://techdepot.com on the left look for the memory finder and lookup your computer and it will tell you what the max ram is for your computer.

512 or 256 isn't nearly enough to run XP well. Upgrade to at least 1GB, 1.5 or 2 is better.

You can go to Crucial.com and find out what you have and what you need. You can buy RAM on eBay but be very careful that you find exactly the right type and that the seller has better than 99% feedback.

Another 512MB will vastly improve performance in photo editing and espesially gaming. Loading times will be decreased and applications will run faster than usual if you run more than one at a time. Totally worth it!!!
