May I please rent a tampon from you?

I prefer to ask "may I have a tissue". I'm surely not gonna offer it back to them after I've used it. But you have an excellent point. Its like people asking "how are you" when they really couldn't care less.

Isn't that a stupid way of asking for something? It's as bad as someone asking if you have an extra dollar, a dollar you could spare, or better yet, "do you have an extra cigarette?" That extra cigarette will come when they start putting 21 in a pack instead of the usual 20.

They want to be polite and it opens up an opportunity for them to repay u for the gesture.... when people ask if they can 'borrow' something, they generally have the intention of returning a favor

They may intend to replace the product taken with a new one. Just like "borrowing" a cup of sugar. You won't ever get that particular cup of sugar back, but they will give you a new one.

Gotta love the English language. One example I like is practicing medicine or practicing law. Should we really trust our lives to someone who is still working it out?
