I have a ferret and he is wonderful! They require quite a lot of work though as you have to train them. Mine lives in the flat and doesn't have a cage or anything and he is just like a dog/cat really, but more fun and excitable!! Rats are great too and don not need nearly as much work as ferrets do. So it depends what you are looking for really.

rats and ferrets both smell. Male rats especially. Ferrets still have an odor even when descented.
Ferrets require a lot of playtime to stay healthy. They also eat a lot to keep their high metabolism going. Rats are easier keepers.
I have a ferret and I have had rats. I prefer ferrets because I see rats (and mice) as food for my snake- I am not a huge fan of small rodents for my pet, though I know people with rats as pets and love them.

#1. ferrets are NOT wild in any way and have not been for a few thousand years, black footed ferrets in the midwest are not related to domestic ferrets at all.
#2. glands do not make a ferret smell bad its the oils in their fur and waste, wash them one every two weeks (no more or they smell worse) and use Bi-Odor in their water and you wont smell a thing.
#3. rats are awsome, ferrets are very high maintinance and require a lot of attention pretty much daily, they also need some training if you get them as babies or they will nip a lot as they grow, rats are also social but require less upkeep (comparatively, if you want a low maininance pet get a fish) and they can also be trained, both are awsome pets, find one that matches your personality, remember if you get one you can never get the other (well pretty much, there are rare exceptions) since ferrets where originally bred to kill rodents and snakes.
BTW I run a ferret rescue league and they are the best pets ever IMHO

My brother had ferrets and I have rats.
They are both good pets. I could never have a ferret b/c of the smell!!! They are cute and all but that smell is unbearable. Rats are extremely intelligent creatures, the best small animal you can have, in my opinion.
