The main radio station in my town plays light contemporary rock, like Seline Dion and that chick from american idol, whats her name..kelly clarkson then theres cristina agulaera and then theres the male versions josh gorbin etc..they all sound the same to me, more specifically they all have the same whiney low energy tone with a few quirks thrown in for "interest"...or am i just getting old?

No you are not getting old. I understand what you are saying- unfortunately its true that artists, prodcuers and all those guys in the music industry today sound the same!! I guess they are trying to go with the market, some people like listening to that stuff, and thats why the producers make the artists sound that way-
I wish people could sing/produce music like way back in the 70s- til right about the late 90's. People back then sang with a passion, they had diversity, it was REAL... you know, but today all we hear is crap all day long!

I have Kelly's debut CD', all of Chris' except the spanish ones and almost all of Celine's, but am not familiiar with Josh's. However, I don't think of another artist when I listen to Kelly, Celine nor Chris.
I do believe that there are copycats when it comes to remakes of songs. What happened to originality? When Christina, Mya, Lil' Kim remade "Lady Mamalade" they had originality in contrast to old school singer Michael McDonald when he remade "Aint No Mountain High Enough" and "I Heard It Through the Grapevine.".
Zapp's "Grapevine" is totally different from Glady Knigh & the Pips and Marvin Gaye's. Amy Stewart's "Knock On Wood" is totally different from Wison Pickett, too.
What will happen to the next generation?

Nope. But the music industry moguls figure that since this person sells a lot of records, maybe they'll buy records from this person too if she or he sounds similar. and you know what? The music industry was right! All of this stupid kids, etc. are buying those Christina Agillera/Beyonce/Kelly Clarkson/Brittney/Pink CDs because the sound is safe and familiar and comfortable. A Janis Joplin or a Ella Fitzgerald wouldn't stand a chance making it in music today. The music industry figures, why take chances? Just give them something we KNOW will sell. It's called safe marketing/

Spoken like a true old fogey! After a while, you can listen to an artist and hear all the similarities with their influences. I cannot listen to Jack Johnson and not think of Anthony Keidis or Jimmy Hendrix. However, he seems to fool all the kids into thinking he's original.

Time to turn off the radio and find some alternative music. Commercial music is all recycled.

Dang, get a new radio station.

Listen online!

But I understand what you are saying. It's like American Idol. Nothing new, nothing exciting where you can't wait to see what they will sing! Just the same old same old singers.

You are not getting old, just older. Sadly, the different sounds right now are irritating.

Try some Buble (if you like Frank lol) or try Matchbox 20, love them. Try Dinah WAshington, she was amazing. Try Norah Jones, she is hip and has an amazing voice. Look to Irish bands or something.

Record labels hop on whatever sound is riding high at the moment (or try to predict what current sounds will soon evolve into "the next big thing").

When that happens, they either sign the newest similar band or focus on the closest sounding band they have and see what they can get from them.

When the sound starts to change again, they move on to the new artist, leaving the old artists to struggle (unless those artists have succeeded in which case they make it to the next round)

No, I hear ya. I wonder if the fact that we've been able to hear pretty well what we wanted since a young age, thereby exposing us to most singing styles, has made it more difficult for us to find a new or unique sound.

Just picked up this Amy Winehouse, kind of different, sounds like a Marianne Faithfull that can hold a note.

In my opinion, I think that people just don't know how to be original anymore, and the thing is, is that people like the sounds of today. Also, many people are using the same bridges from older songs and using them in more contemporary ways.

i agree. i remember a time when it actually took tallent to be a music artist.i judge good artist by if u took the words out of the song, and listen to just the music, could u say hell ya i know who that is. example acdc "shook me all night long. u cannot mistake that song for something else. america needs to get off the pop trend and get back to real music. find artists who actually have something different worth listening to. i found flogging molly recently and its one of the best bands ive heard in a long time
