I am 18 weeks pregnant and I am just curious (the baby is healthy so again this is just curiosity and nerves). If I was to miscarry would I have to go through labor and delivery or would it be a simple miscarriage. I have been trying to figure this out b/c I am a paranoid person and I guess I am just curious. I didn't even have a regular labor with my son I was induced and the labor was HELL.

It depends on how big the baby is, but you need to stop worrying!!! You are less likely to have any problems like that now. There are few things that if you did experience one at this stage that the doctors could do. They could do just a normal D&C, a suction D&C (had this with my son I lost at almost 20 weeks, he was considered a still birth), or they could have to go through labor. More then likely, the baby would be small enough to do a D&C, but it's really up to the doctor. Don't worry!!!!!!!! Everything should go fine and just so you know, I've had 2 live births since my son and I'm 19 weeks with my third. No problems so far, and not likely to be any. Don't fret so much, it will make your B/P go up ;) !!!! I'm teasing. Just relax and enjoy pregnancy!! It's hard to just enjoy it, but it's worth it!!

At this point, the baby is already a fetus. Therefore, you would probably go into early labor. At 18 weeks, there is no way the baby would live. But quit worrying! The likelihood of something like that happening is not that high unless something traumatic happens to you. I have a friend who delivered her baby at 24 weeks. Unfortunately, the baby died. But not b/c of its age but because she had been in labor for over 24 hours and didn't know it. She thought she was peeing on her self. If she had been to the hospital right away, the baby would have been born prematurely but would have had a chance to survive. She is a group B Strep carrier and b/c her water was broke for so long, the baby contracted group B Strep which after autopsy was what ultimately killed him. If you ever feel like something is wrong, don't hesitate, go directly to Labor & Delivery at the hospital. They can check you out and either do something about it or reassure you and send you home. But in the mean time, quit stressing and take it easy. Enjoy the feeling of knowing a life is growing inside of you and you are contributing to the existence of the human race. You will be fine! Good luck and congrats!

It depends. A miscarriage happens in the first 20 weeks and then it would be crampy and not really like a delivery. After 20 weeks it would be considered a stillbirth and you would probably experience the same feelings as you do in labor and delivery. I listed a site with some good information in the source box.

At your stage, you wouldn't go through labor and delivery.

They dilate your cervix, crush the skull and remove the baby, as if you were having an abortion. They then clean the rest of the area.

The details are a little gory and sad, but I figure that's what you were asking. The only reason that I know this is I was accidentally directed to a pro-choice website when I was researching all of the down's syndrome tests.

What a gruesome question!

I suspect you are asking this because you are worried about having another "hell" labor the second time around, and you are fretting about another labor. Do you think this is true?

Remember that induced labors are far more painful and grueling, and you can avoid them by declining a routine induction (most inductions are given because they are more convenient for the doctor, not because you really need to be induced).

Also, what are you doing to make your labor go more smoothly this time? Have you considered taking a Bradley Method Childbirth class? I think it really prepares someone to give birth. Also, have you done some reading. There's a great book by Ina May Gaskin that gives great birth stories.

Perhaps you can hire a doula, if you can afford one, to help coach you through the labor this time around? Most women who hire doulas have more positive experiences.

good luck.

I would figure it would be a difficult misscarriage. This is a really dark question let me tell you. By 20 weeks your baby is normally 1 lb so I would think that at 18 weeks, you baby is close to 1 lb. I think there would be some pushing needed. I don't think they consider it a stillborn yet, I think that is at 24 weeks but you would have to go in for a scrape to clean out the uterus. I pray you don't have this happen and for a healthy devlivery.

the only time you will go into labor should be if you have a still birth. When you have a miscarriage you cramp really bad and bleed alot and have big cclots (i know i know it sounds gross.) Remember the more stress you put yourself under by worring about it, the more stress your baby is under.

Unfortunately, yes. You would have to deliver at this point. Please, for your sake and the sake of the baby, try to think of positive things like what theme to have for a nursery, what you want for a birth plan, or start a pregnancy journal for you little one to read one day. Negative thoughts like yours are normal, but you shouldn't be stressing yourself out like this. ~A Mom of three

Depends on how you miscarry - most likely you would have to have a procedure done to remove all of the "product."

However, girl, STOP being paranoid and enjoy your pregnancy!
