I just got a flash drive, and the manual says to "perform a 'safety remove hardware' by selectiong 'USB Mass Storage Device' before removing the flash disk". Anyone know where the mass storage device is on my computer.

There isn't an arrow appearing near the clock. What now? (could be because it is an offbrand)

The main thing is I don't want to damage it when I remove it from the USB port.

You wont damage it, just the data on it. Just make sure you are finished copying or finished using the data on it before removing it and it will be just fine 99% of the time but it won't break.

When you plug it in, an icon will appear near your clock that looks like an arrow and a gray square. You want to left-click that once and it will pop up a menu, then just click the USB Mass Storage Device and it will safely remove it.

That is what the flash drive is. A USB mass storage device..

The directions they gave you is simply a preventative measure to ensure that there is no data being written to the device when you disconnect it.

check the bottom right corner of your comp once the flash drive is plugged in...it should have a green arrow and a little gray thing next to it. right click and you should be able to eject it safely.
