I just typed a letter for an attorney I work with and I signed my name to the letter with just my first inital of my first name and spelled out my last name. The reason I do this is because people can't seem to get my name right, so I just thought it would be ok to just use my first initial and spell out last name ex: D. Ross. What's so bad about that?

No it's not unprofessional. It's a good way to hide your identification. Do be prepared if people refer to you as Mr. instead of Ms.

Well, perhaps you should speak to your boss and consider a short-cut first name that's easy and that suits you as well.

On the other hand - is it that serious if people would write a letter with a mis-spelt first name? Why don't you just overlook the issue and forget about?

I would never use "D. Ross" - then nobody knows if you are male or female!

And what about your email address?

I don't think that is unprofessional - a signature can be whatever you choose it to be - I would recommend that underneath where you signed, your full name is typed. Or if you are signing the letter on behalf of the attorney, sign the attorney's name to the letter followed by your initials (i.e. attorney jones/dr) - that's how I sign all of my boss' letters.

It's awkward.

Type out the letter and type your first name, middle initial and last name.

Then above or under it sign your name in cursive.

I wouldn't know but it doesn't sound unprofessional to me. I think it's a real heads up move on your part.
