The following things really helped:

1) Moving out of my family home, and thus having to do more things on my own.

2) Working, period.

3) Moving out of my home state, and having to make a whole new social circle.

4) Getting an organizing job with a non-profit, in which I made cold calls and sometimes knocked on doors without having had any previous contact with the inhabitants.

As a child, I was known as "the girl who never talks" (not literally true, but that's what people said), and now, my friends can't believe I was once shy.

I was quite shy from 1st grade through my a large percentage of my adult life. (I'm 38 now). Over the last 5-6 years I have come out of my shell so to speak primarily because of bolstering my self-esteem. While I am not the life of the party now, I no longer feel it's necessary. I can comfortably go to a party and mingle but without feeling anxious over how many people I talk to, and who I talk to.

How did this happen? Eventually (& hopefully) as you age, you start to realize that what other people think of you isn't important. Who is someone else to judge you? It's what YOU think of yourself that matters.

If you find yourself surrounded by a bunch of negative nelly's, that's definitely not going to help your self-esteem. I choose to be around positive people, and I choose to look at the good in life. I also spent some time in therapy learning about the way I relate to others and how interpersonal interactions can effect my feelings. You have to be ready for therapy though and you have to be willing to work at it.

Best Regards,
Holly

I was very shy in HS. A social in-bred. My shyness probably came from always being too self-conscious. I think what got me over it was learning to be comfortable with myself and focusing on myself in a more positive way. If you are in HS, remember that nothing truly counts socially, and that everyone is really at the same point in the process of life. Some people are just a lot better at masking it. You are allowed to make as many mistakes as you want within reason.
Focus on what you are good at and what you have accomplished and what you plan to accomplish (your life's goal). These are things that will build your confidence, and they are also things no one can ever take away.

I think it was getting away from most of what I ever knew.

When I'm around my mom, or in my hometown, I'm still having to fight to not seem shy. When I'm out on my own, though, I'm outgoing and even funny (sometimes). :-)

It started when I was in high school, actually. I went to a choir camp with a few other people from my school. I kind of shocked them when I went up to a guy all the other girls had a crush on and made friends with him. I kinda found that it was easier than I thought it would be. It didn't really happen for me, though, until I moved out and went to college. I was there with only three people I knew from home, and we didn't see each other all that much. I just got out there, introduced myself to everyone, worked to remember names and facts, and kind of got out of the shyness habit.

There are still times, though, that I have bouts of shyness, but in general, it's a lot better than it was ten years ago.

Growing up... I think I was shy as a younger person, because I was worried about what people thought of me... when I reached my mid 20's I finally started looking at things a bit differently... more from a "people are just poeple" viewpoint...onece I put things into perspective, it seemed silly to worry over being "judged" and now I just get out there and have a great time... no more living on the sidelines for me!

I moved A LOT when i was younger so I became shy, what got me out of that was my friends. We were all shy though so not only did we make eachother more open to others we became new people, went to holly wood, london, and the V.I. and met tons of new people, which helped get rid of the left over shy. It's the giving up of thoughts that you can't do something that makes your get out there and live.

Honestly, apathy. I used to be shy and nobody liked me. I was shy because I was afraid that if I said or did something stupid they would learn to hate me. Then one day I just said "To Hell with it!" and made myself comfortable with the idea of everyone hating me. This made me less shy and I discovered people actually like me for the most part. No accounting for taste :p.

My job is in an entertainment business. I turn on for it and then I turn off when I'm off the floor. I am less bashful as I was when I was young, age will help. In the time being, remember we are all the same, we put our pants on the same. You are the essence of God, shine.

I overcame my shyness by pretending that a)I already knew these people as my friends that would not judge me. or b) These people would never ever be seen again, so it wouldn't matter what happened.

I never thought I would be singing on stage due to stage fright. I got over it by just plain doing it keeping in mind that these people would never cross my path again, so it wouldn't matter if I was bad. These people did cross my path again many times, but I never seemed judged by them, so it was okay. It's all in your perception of the people around you.

Well I realized that I've had problem with people ym whole life. Everything I've wanted I've had to work for alone and on my own. Why should I care anyone's opinion of me if they do nothing for me and are nothing to me. I just stopped caring about the world.
