We have a wedding in May in OHIO. Husband wants to drive (rent car, stop over night in hotel half way), I want to fly. We have a wedding to get to; this is not a vacation where we stop to sightsee. Tell me how to convince him to fly (he thinks its cheaper to drive)

It is cheaper to drive. I have driven from Ohio to NY about 3 times now and it really isn't that bad of a drive. Plus you wouldn't necessarily have to stay overnight in a hotel if you timed it right. Plus, why not sight see? It would make the trip all the more enjoyable.

Well, with gas prices steadily rising, he might want to consider a plane ticket. There are so many spring specials going on at the moment that you could cut your cost by flying. Since you can get a non-stop flight, there is no extra cost for overnight sheltering. He'll also be too exhausted from driving and won't enjoy the wedding as much if he has to make the drive. You should calculate how much each would cost and let him see the comparison. Hope this has helped some...good luck!

How about meeting half way. Seeing the sites (best way to see people's back yards) quickly without driving. Take the train. Then rent a car from Cleveland, Pittsburgh, or where ever the nearest Amtrak station is. Renting in Ohio should be cheaper than renting in NYC and putting on all those miles.

I live in Ohio and drive to Nj and Delaware quite a bit. the drive is actually nice and relaxing. The other posts are right, we usually leave at about 6am and get to the east coast about 6pm( thats with eating and refueling). I have a friend who lives in NJ but used to live in Dayton, Ohio. She would fly home for a weekend. Although it sounds quick, rarely are there direct flights, so you would have to consider a stop or two to make the price right. In addition, when the price of gas rises, so do the price of airline tickets. I estimate, you could drive for the price of one ticket. If your concern is that one of you might get a little cranky on a long drive, you still might have crankiness, with the check in at the airport, the possiblity of flight delays, and the stops. I vote for driving. Now renting a car might be a little pricey if you dont get something with unlimited miles, but the quality time with your husband might be worth the effort.

NYC to anywhere in Ohio is a puddle jump driving. The maximum time on the road couldn't be more than 12-13 hrs . I really don't see a need for a mid point hotel room.
This may be one of those few instances where it would be cheaper to drive.
Give us the from where and to where info so we can narrow it all down a bit.

Find out how much car rental (include cost of gas), hotel, and food is going to cost you. Hit a few of the travel sights online and see what the round trip cost of flights are. You may be surprised at the deals you can find especially if you book soon enough in advance. If you can give him an honest, fair estimate of the driving cost and can find compareable flight costs it may be an easy sell to fly.

Check airline ticket prices to your destination and then check gas prices. It's probably cheaper to fly. I'd rather fly that distance than drive any day -- and rent the car at the airport in Ohio.

If money is the issue show him how much 2 plane tickets would cost and try to compare that to how much it would cost to drive and get a room for a night. If it is over a weekend the hotel room may have a price similar to the plane tickets.

IMHO, Depends on the length of time you will be gone. Your husband will be happier in your own car and if he's happy, you'll be happy. So, my advice is if the length of the trip > 4 days(including travel days), you should drive. Otherwise you should fly, because the travel time would be too draining in such a short period of time.

Hmm well me personally I prefer driving just because its more fun to me. But try to convince him by telling him that its KNOWN that flying is more safe than driving. Most accidents happen by driving a car. Thats how most people pass away, Ive read it and I believe it too cause my grandmother died that way and she was young, maybe 40 years old. It was her fault but by accident, she just lost control and she died and her three daughters in the back all survived. So you never know what will happen by driving, flying is more safe and thats that.
