Alphanumeric is numbers and letters. There are many other symbols such as π √ ♥ ± which are non-alphanumeric.

Alphanumeric is simply the alphabet and the numbers o through 9.
Non-alphanumeric refers to all other 'symbols' used on a computer keyboard.
!"£$$%^&* are all Non-alphanumeric.

means any character that's not in the alphabet or is not a number. so if it's not between A and Z and between 0 and 9 then it's non-alphanumeric
examples of non-alphanumeric characters would be:

non-alphanumeric meand not alphabetic or numeric, that is, not a letter (A-Z or a-z) and not a number (0-9).
In other words, punctuation and special symbols like !@#$%^&*()[]{}=-.
Putting things like these into passwords make them (a little) harder for people to guess.

Others have already provided some good information.
Keep in mind, though, that if you intend to perform calculations, you must do so with Numeric variables. There are some exceptions (special cases) but I won't confuse you with them here.
