The significance of green for a holiday originating in the Emerald Isle? Faith, an begora, they spend too much time studyin black history in February and none at all on Green History in March and too much time on March Madness in this country which was built by fine Irishmen like Cab Callaway, Ella Fitzgerald, Bill Cosby, and Michael Jourdan. Green is for the Catholics in Ireland who celebrated the feast day of St. Patrick as Patron Saint of Ireland. (and don't tell me you haven't heard of the forty shades of green in Ireland? No, t'is sad then). That is the major denomination in the Republic of Ireland and is one third of the colors of the Irish flag(the other two being white, and orange, the colors of brotherhood and protestants who supported William of Orange and where Northern Ireland is still dominated by the British). The green also stands for the color of the Shamrock, the first green of spring.

Really now, you're serious?

Well a shamrock is green.

Ireland is known as the 'emerald isle' (emerald is a shade of green in case you don't know).

Plus we get lots of rain over here.
So we've lots of grass (which is green)...
and trees (which are green).

Thus green is associated with Ireland
and, consequently, with Paddy's day.

Green became popular in US celebrations as it is a color of the Irish flag.

In Ireland green was not worn because it is the favorite color of the faeries, who might steal people wearing too much green.
