My cubicle at work has a desk that locks and my key broke off in it, it's taking maintenence forever to fix it and I have things in it I really need. My different co workers have suggested using a strong magnet and we have tried using fine tools like pliers and needle nose tweezers to try and grip the broken key but to no avail. I am at my wits end and tempted to try a crowbar which I don't know where I will get one but just frustrated. Any suggestions folks?

If the key is still in the lock and has all of the cuts inside you should be able to turn it with and screwdriver. If some of the cuts on the key broke off with the part you still had in your hand find a woodworker. If the have a spiral scroll saw blade snip the fastener on one end and insert it above the key. Press towards the thickest part of the key and gently pull out until you have enough out to grab with pliers. The spiral Saw blade has teeth all around it and has all ways worked for me.

Get a lock picking kit.. and not one that pick's locks.. one that pick's keys stuck in locks.. it has a thin piece of metal or two with little teeth on the end to drag the key out once it's slid past the thick part of the key. Or try using a really strong paper clip with a teeny-tiny L shape on the end that you insert beside the broken key.

Try super glue. Put a bead of it on the part of the key that you have out. Mind you, a very small amount, right down the middle. Wait until it sets up a little then push it in against the broken part. You don't want it to squeeze out when you push it in. Wait about an hour and maybe it will pull out. Good luck.

Was the proper key completely in the desk, as so you could just turn the shaft? If not, you're probably going to have to drill the lock, which will cause the least amount of damage.
