I received 2 separate w-2's because of a recent merger of our company. If I e-file them separately, I am getting a tax refund, but if I combine them, I owe money. Is there any law that prohibits me from filing them separately. Please list your sources.

Thanks!

ALL of your income must be combined on one return.

There is no such thing as "filing W2s separately" and there never has been.

Well, no matter how many W-2's that you may have within a year (either from your situation, or from switching jobs or even having multiple jobs) you have to file for total earned income within a year. This means that you will be submitting both W-2 earned incomes on your return. I would definitely consult a tax professional on this one, because it sounds as if not enough taxes were taken out of one, or both, of the incomes. Also, if through the merger process you actually switched jobs or titles, you could get a small tax credit for switching jobs. (I got a small tax credit because I moved jobs - not sure if my increased income was part of that or not)

No matter what happens, you can save some money from your filing process this year. I found a site that actually paid my filing fees this year with H&R block (a savings of about $80). I went through their steps (took about 30 minutes) and was even told afterwards that if I had owed the IRS instead of getting a return, that they would have paid for up to $500 of my taxes this year. So, in effect, I filed completely for free this year! I hope that they offer the same incentives next year as well. Check them out and let me know how much they save for you.

You are required to file all of your income on the same form irregardless of how many w-2 forms you have.
