My broadcasting professors told me to make a demo and that I could make great money at voice work. I'm currently working on making my demo with a professional voice over artist now. I'm just curious as to how well other people do with this career. I'll probably obviously need a full-time career besides this right? Is it even possible, or will voice over work take up all of my time?

It's totally possible to make a fairly decent living (even by LA standards) by doing nothing but voice over work. I have several friends that do amost nothing but voices for video games and they are getting booked all the time. Couple of things I noticed when they were starting out was that, the ones who could do multiple voices (Comic, scarry, anouncer etc) booked work alot faster than others. Having a demo reel and a site where people can sample your work on-line was also a huge plus. Also if you can get in with a manager or an agent that deals with voice over work, they can be a huge help as most VO jobs don't get posted to breakdowns the way acting jobs do.

Even James Earl Jones's voice can become overused. So even if you were to make it big and be able to live off your voice over gigs, you'd eventually have to balance the voice over work with something else. But the chances of being able to live solely off of voice work is quite small. Sure, individual voice work gigs can "make great money," but that's not the same as saying that the work is on-going. The life of a performer is feast and famine: going to tons of auditions and winning some and losing some. And the chances are that your performance pay will not last through your dry spells. That's when performers become waiters or find something else to pay the rent in the interim.

It is really hard to have a full on career in just voice-over work. But, there are many people who are actors that can do voice-overs like Ray Romano. But, if you have the voice all people are looking for, you might be able to make a full career out of it .

Good Luck!

I have done some voice-overs, not as many as I'd like, of course, but I do have a pal who's making a very nice living on voice overs, so it is possible.

Yes you can...but it's hard. Once you break in you will work ALL the time. It's a very closed shop. You get one job and the engineer on that job will call you for another and another. But it's not easy......the people who do it, work all the time, but there are not many of them. Good luck. It's alot of fun!
