Nicolo Machiavellis book is manual for the Italian Princes who ruled the fragmented city states; politically and militarily unstable. Nicolo's first main contributions to governing philosophy are:

Firstly- callous, effective action is the best course- and princedom needs no ethical right to exercise that action.

Secondly- he gave solid logical advice involving many kinds of political machinations; so when callous methods were used they at least achieved their aim.

His writings were revelationary in two ways. Firstly that they were the antithesis of Chivalry- the moral code which had (pretended to) guide Europes kings and nobles since the 11th century. This Chivalry partly provided a king's justification of his position.

Secondly they provided advice to a position which was supposedly entirely guided and chosen by the will of God- in doing so stating the fallibility of monarchs and providing clearly ungodly advice.

well it was a book written by Machiavelli to instruct new princes on how to basically keep their throne. He taught things like cut off blood lines that threaten your power, to rule with a iron fist but not to be cruel. His ideas if you look at Western Civilations can be seen throughout history in the most accomplished of rulers. Its actually not a bad read, not exactly a page turner but definitely worth taking a look at, help understand history better.
