Im aware that some people think that giving rodents to bearded dragons is bad. Others feed them to dragons exclusively and have absolutely no issues. Im aware that mice or rats have less of an impaction issue than other things.... why? And how do you judge what size you should feed them... does it go by distance between the eyes, size of head, throat, etc..? Also what size rodents do you feed your bearded dragon?

It's best to give them only to dragons that are large enough to take them. The impaction issue is mostly with hair - pinkies are the best to use, followed by fuzzies. The distance between the eyes is the safest measurement. Pre-killed and frozen/thawed is safest (and more convenient for you).

That said, mice have a somewhat higher fat content than rats of the same size (at least adults do), but are higher in calcium and protein. Mix them up and feed him some of each.

I'm adding two links - one is a nutritional analysis of "prey" foods, the second has a list of foods and feeding info for beardeds.

I would not feed them to anything less than a sub adult and then only pinky's. my adults eat pinky's and fuzzies. I shy away from full grown mice because the do fight back. don't want to harm my beardies. as far as using the word exclusively I wouldnt feed my dragons anything exclusively I ensure the right diet of veggies fruits and protein. you can google beraded dragon diet and get plenty of info. you will also find varying thoughts on mice feeding but my vet of 20+ years in exotics says it's ok and I have never had any ill effects. I have no experience in rat feeding. hope this helps
