Richard III was one of Shakespeare's most interesting characters. He is also one of the few who actually TELLS you about his character and why he is the way he is. Read the Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer speech carefully. Richard tells you that his deformities make him an angry and jealous person. It is those deformities that make him act the way he does. It's right there.
An interesting idea. Go rent the movie The Goodbye Girl with Richard Dreyfus and watch it. In it, Richard Dreyfus plays an actor who is rehearsing to play Richard III in an off Broadway production. The director is gay and decides Richard's true motivation is that he was gay. He makes Dreyfus play Richard with the hump and a limp and a lisp and all kinds of effected movements. It is hilarious. However it will help you a lot understanding Richard III. I always recommended that movie to my students. And they always came back telling me how much it helped. C.

Divorced from history it's a good play. However, you have to remember that Shakespeare was writing for the Tudors who had a very tenuous claim to the Throne: Richard lll, our last English king, had to be protrayed as a villain.

And in case you haven't found them arlready, he has his own society, The Richard III Society, especially active in the UK and the US with websites. They discuss the historical and Shakespearian pictures of him, sometimes quite heatedly!
