I am currently working on a history project and need examples that involve something good stemming from disasters. For example, canned goods were invented to preserve food being shipped to soldiers during wartime, the advent of modern day nursing began during the Civil War opening a door for women to work in the medical field, and sonar was invented during World War 2 to detect enemy submarines, but afterward was used to map ocean topography. I realize all three of these examples relate to war, but any disaster--whether it be natural or manmade--would fit into this project. Thanks!

The Titanic Disaster made changes in the radio operation systems (or Morse code radios, I believe). Before that, most radios were turned off at midnight, and this is one of the reasons when they were unable to call for help, since no one answered.

Since then, there is 24 hour service.

Also, fires in high rise buildings have changed building codes for cities like Chicago and New York, on fire escapes so that people are able to get out safely and save lives, instead of being trapped and die in the high rise fires.

For every tragedy, there are measures that prevent, such as WTC (communications and evacuation plans)), 04 Tsunami (building better ocean from barriers), even Katrina in New Orleans, which is whether it is safe to rebuild in an area that sits below sea level and something like that can happen again.

Hope that helps.

There are a lot of racists that want to make the white race superior to others in some magical way. They are wrong. Why have the white races seemed to progress so much more technologically is because of the disaster of winter. Having to make it through cold winters forced those people to be ingenious. Some will also add that the protestant work ethic contributed quite a bit but I know some hard working catholics as well.
