The term Halloween, and its older rendering Hallowe'en, is shortened from All-hallow-even, as it is the evening of/before "All Hallows' Day"[1] (also known as "All Saints' Day"). The holiday was a day of religious festivities in various northern European Pagan traditions[citation needed], until Popes Gregory III and Gregory IV moved the old Christian feast of All Saints' Day from May 13 to November 1.

"All Hallows Eve," bastardized, became "Halloween." (All Hallows Day was/is November 1, and the eve of that day is the modern Halloween.)

the old name for it was "all hallows eve"
hallow being holy. It was a day celebrating those who had died, particularly those who had made it into heaven. It was also called "all saints day" and in mexico it is called "day of the dead". The day after all saints day is "all souls day" a day to celebrate the lives of those who (eghm) didn't make it into heaven.
hope that helps!
