The fact that you are "replacing a window" tells me (and you) that there is no structural support under the top of the window. Chances are 95% that the brick is just a face and can be hit out with a sledge hammer once the window and frame are out and gone. Sounds like a great Saturday project. You'll be fine. Measure the opening and get a door set that fits inside (as said above: finished size plus 2" will give you some wiggle room) and away you go! Have fun, renos are great.

It is not a monumental task as long as you don't have to widen the opening. Even then, it is not that difficult. Effectively, check the top of the window opening to see if it is sufficient height to install a 6'-8" door (allow about 82"). If it is higher than that - no problem; if it isn't tall enough, then the job becomes more difficult. Next, check the width to make sure that you have enough width to install a full door frame - the width of the door desired plus 2" minimum. If you have all of these dimensions satisfied, then you can continue. Removal of the material at the bottom is relatively easy. You will also have to address the threshold area as well. The installation is much easier if you buy the entire door unit with frame (it is worth the difference). Good luck on your project. Oh, and as an added thought - make sure your header over the top is one piece.

the framing will cut out the width of the window too...
is the door smaller than your new hole????? if not get a smaller one & trim the perimeter outside with siding. what about header height???? this is a deal killer if the window header height is much less than 83 1/2" you will;
1. have to cut the brick & header - ( very difficult )
2. cut the door
3. have a special door made ( very expensive )
most likely it is lower than 83 1/2 "
french doors usually from 4' to 6' - in 6" increments
good luck!

Not a big job ,but make sure that the lintel above the window is strong enough to hold up the brick work before you take out the window .
