We have a DSL in our office, set up for our computer. But we were wondering how we can get it so our PS3 in our family room (roughly 25ft away) can be connected through our DSL without tons of cables going through our condo. This guy at Best Buy said to get a Wireless Router for that. But which kind? I saw that some were in the $200 range which I found pretty expensive.

Is there a good router that's significantly cheaper than that, and that would allow us to connect our PS3 with our DSL? Also, is there anything that we could buy that would connect our TIVO (right next to our PS3) to that router as well? The guy at Best Buy said TIVO's need to be connected directly to the phone jack. Is that true?

Thanks!

Do you already have a router that connects your office computer to the DSL? Do you just have a DSL modem?

If you already have a router, then you don't need another one you only need something called a wireless access point (WAP). A WAP has no smarts, all it does is convert the wireless to Ethernet.

The router provides services like DHCP (IP address allocation), Firewall(keep the bad guys out), NAT (Network Address Translation) etc... If your going to connect more than one device to the Internet with a residential service you MUST have a router.

Wireless (Wifi) distances are a function of many things, the primary one being what sorts of physical barriers there are between the two things connecting wirelessly. Wireless is effected by things like brick walls or steel wall studs or even sheet rock. However, 25' is a pretty short distance, and pretty much any wireless router would work for that.

If you go look at web sites for netgear or linksys they have tutorials to educate you on what you need.

No idea about the Tivo, it may not have an Ethernet or Wifi port on it, therefore dial-up is your only option?

Ive got a Linksys 2.4 GHz broadband "speed booster" router and its great. My Wii is about 25 feet across the room and picks it up just fine. Also my laptop can be in the next room and still picks up the connection. You can get it and try it out, and if you dont like it you can always return it! Good luck!

Tivo does need to be directly hooked to a phone line as well.

Oh the router I have cost around $100

Linksys DSL/ADSL wireless router with range extender would do much. Price should be around $130. (This is the price range for I got one recently in Qatar). It has four wired RJ45 connector ports for more connectivity. You could connect PS2 or PS3 as well.
