You can always rent a astronaut costume from a local costume shop, thats if they are renting one off course.

If you want to make a costume yourself follow these instructions:
1)Spray paint a pair of old jeans or trousers white.
2)Spray paint a old jumper white aswell.
3)Spray paint a motorcycle helmet white.
4)To give the sense of the costume being padded fill the jeans or trousers with paper and similarly the jumper. You can also tuck the trousers into your childs socks in order to stop the paper from falling out and similary with the jumper tucked into the trousers.
5)Create an oxygen tank by painting an old carboard box or cereal box
6)Attach toilet rolls together and paper mache the rolls in order to produce oxygen pipes.

The alternate method, which will seem more like an astronaut costume is to use bubble wrap in sections, so arms, legs, torso and attach them using safety clips to childs clothes. Doing it in parts will give the flexibility in order to move around.

This will might be quite expensive if you do not have lots of bubble rap.

Hope this helps

Try Grand Rental Station, if you have one in your area... Or, any general costume shop.

Otherwise, take an old pair of jeans, an old long-sleeve shirt, stuff them with paper, then cover them with paper mache. When it's dry, take the paper out, and "try" to slip them on your kid. Paint it white. The helmet - borrow a motocross helmet.

This doesn't really answer your question but you can buy an orange launch and entry suit from the Kennedy Space Center's gift shop. I don't think you can buy the white ones though, I've only seen the orange ones. Sorry. Good Luck!
