My wife even says that I have disgraced myself by hiring her and the customers just don't seem to wan't a woman to work on their cars. Is this the last line of work women can't break through. I ask before if anyone on here would let a woman work on their car and the response was 100% positive. But in the real world it just isn't that way. What if it really was your car and a girl was really fixing it. How would you feel. Please be honest.

Well JT the customers can see her in the shop because we have nothing to hide (Big Window) and they even request that a man do the work on their car

Hey csucdartgirl, do you know what an Impact wrench or an air rachet is. they are high torque air tools that weigh less than 3lbs. and can produce over 700lbs of torque so the tighten thing up theory is out the window

My sister-in-law took the starter off her van and replaced it. She correctlly diagnosed the problem, bought the proper model of starter, and figured out how to do all that on her own in just a few hours. I would not have had a clue what was wrong or why the car would not start.

She's my hero. Given a choice, I think I would prefer having a woman work on my car. She is less likely to take short cuts or cheat me. There are lots of good male mechanics, of course, but there are also far more bad male mechanics than there are female mechanics altogether.

It may very well be. Kudos for you in taking a chance. You wife has bought into the old sexism shame on her

Women are great at a lot of things. We have even gone to the moon and helped to do some of the repair/ It wouldn't bother me if a woman worked on my car. In fact as a woman I would be delighted. Perhaps the area you are in may have the small town mentality so for business this may not be so great. If you tell her to go you will be faced with discrimination

Does this mechanic have clients. Perhaps you may want to do some promotion or have her featured on the local TV station.

it doesn't matter to me who works on it as long as they do a good job.. whoever it is, if they mess something up I'm not going back to that place.. some people probably don't trust a woman mechanic though.. I have to admit that I sometimes do a double-take if I see a woman by herself changing a tire or something.. my wife didn't even want to pump her own gas when we started dating.. ;) it's not that women aren't capable of being mechanics.. it's just something we're not used to seeing.. I know there are plenty of women in the world who know more about cars than I do!

Nothing wrong with having a woman work on cars. I agree with the person above, I don't care who works on it, as long as it is fixed. If there is anything wrong when they says its finished, I can just take it back and make them do it again, and then I might not trust her again, but I don't care who does it.
I would think that a woman would feel comfortable having a woman work on her vehicle, so I can see some advantages.

My husband has been a mechanic since he was 14. I know how hard it is. Some things are very heavy and you have to be quite strong to turn some of those bolts etc. especially due to rust.

Me? I would try anything once. But not many people would. You failed to mention if you had any other mechs in your place and how many.

Also, if you do you have to be sure they aren't trying to sabatage the situation by giving their "opinion" to customers who are not sure what to do.

Most white collar older men and I bet some younger latino men would be the worst ones to trust her.

How about it guys, who is worst at trusting a woman?

I hate this question....to be honest I would not like it. I say that even though I do a lot of work on my own car and I am a female. She really would have to sell her service to me. In my town there is a woman who owns a large mechanical garage, she sells her service by teaming up with the male mechanic. When she sends out her specials on a postcard both of them are on it. Even though I have beenthere and had work done I still feel slighly suspicious aobut it. I hate that. Wish you had not brought it up.

I have a woman who does my body and fender work and I know she does really good work. Who cares if its male or female as long as the work is done correct? That's why you go to a shop. Maybe there are other reasons you're not drawing customers? Lack of advertising, demographics, locations? If you hired her for her qualifications, then stand behind her work!

I would be skeptical about a woman mechanic. I would think that a female wouldn't be able to tighten things down in a satisfactory fashion. But I guess I am buying into the strength issue of males and females.

If it is something non-weight bearing/torque-bearing, like an oil change or electrical wiring I say who cares. But if is heavy then I'd go for the male.

Sorry if you don't like it, but I am honest.

If I had a car, I wouldn't mind, but most of the majority of the people do mind women fixing their cars becuase they think that women don't know how to fix cars. That is one thing that women can't do and still is a man's job. Sure we are in the 21st century, but women still are suppose to leave some things for a man to fix.

Personally, I would have no issue at all with a woman working on my car. I don't care who does it, as long as it gets done right!

I can say from experience that just because one is male doesn't mean he has a better understanding of cars. *I* knew more about cars than my ex-husband. Ha!
