Here's what The National Eating Disorders Association says. Eating disorders are complex conditions that come from a combination of long-standing behavioral, emotional, psychological, and social factors. Scientists and researchers are still learning about the causes of these emotionally and physically damaging conditions. We do know, however, about some of the general issues that can lead to the development of eating disorders.
People with eating disorders often use food and the control of food in an attempt to compensate for feelings and emotions that may seem overwhelming. For some, dieting and throwing up may begin as a way to cope with painful emotions and to feel in control of one’s life, but ultimately, these behaviors will damage a person’s physical and emotional health, self-esteem, and sense of competence and control.

Main cause: insecurity. Society is constantly telling us in a variety of overt and covert ways that being skinny is equivalent to being beautiful. So, the young ladies who suffer from these conditions are willing to starve and/or vomit in order to achieve this "perception" of beauty. Me? I'm a size 12, I love a good cheeseburger, and I know I'm beautiful!!
