Two reasons for this, really. (1) Video-game designers have to start production on a game before rosters are set, and in some cases before it's even known if rookies have signed with the team, so those players may be left off the rosters. Also, trades can happen after the game is in final production, which throws off the roster as well. (2) Some players don't want their names associated with video games and ask that they not be used. It can happen as well that a player signs an exclusive contract with a video-game maker, and as a result his name cannot be on a game for any other platform.

I believe you can get rosters updated online if you want to go through the trouble. As for missing players, video game companies have to sign (and pay for) an agreement with the NBA Players Association to use real names. The players association will distribute the money to the players, so each player gets a check every year.

There are a number of instances where a player will not allow his name to be distributed by the players association, although they still pay their union dues. The player may feel the NBAPA is not representing him well enough. Or he feels he can get a better individual deal with the video game company. Of course, he doesn't share in the video game money with the other players (and may not be able to cut a deal with the video game company).

For many years, Michael Jordan's name wasn't on the Chicago Bulls roster on video games. Barry Bonds' name is not on MLB 2K7 although he's replaced by a similar player.

By the way, it stinks and makes little sense in my mind. I don't think video game companies will go out of its way to make individual deals. It would set a bad precedent and add lots of costs if lots of famous players start doing it. Plus you make fans and video game buyers mad. And players who don't participate miss out on a nice check.

Some players make the roster after the game was created and maybe even about to hit shelves date. every transactions happens during the early and midsummers they upgrade is made but anything late in the summer is not. Late summer is when most games are done being created and ready to hit the shelves.

First guy was wrong. This happens a lot with rookies. If a rookie is not signed to a contract. before the game is released there left out especially secound round and undrafted rookies. Last year on NBA Live Shaun Livingston wasn't on the game. This year Paul Millsap isn't on the game.
