It is my dream to make it to Penn University! I live in Missouri. I am an A+ B+ student (mostly A's) I am in all advanced classes. I run Cross Country. I will be in NHS next year and doing community service for it. I am Vice President of an Explorers Club outside of school. I'm involved in Readers Theater and Speech and Debate. I'm taking French and Tech Edu. next year. I am soon to get a job also. I am interested in going to Penn's school of Engineering. I plan on trying to go here then working as a Disney Imagineer. I am only a Freshmen but I know I must start now. I don't have everything planned out yet, but I am still working on it. Do you think I have a chance at making it? What could I do to improve my chances? Any advice given from someone who has gone to Penn or anyone would be great! Thanks!

Well, since I'm still excited from getting my answers on my Air Force Academy question, I'm really excited for you. It's sounds like you have a really good chance of getting in and I hope you do. Even though it means I will be in Colorado and you will be in Pennsylvania. We'll have web cams and call each other daily. Can't wait for you to get more answers.

I love being your best friend, since I've been your friend for 10 years. Love Ya, Good Luck!

There is no Penn University.

Do you mean The University of Pennsylvania? It is a highly prestigious Ivy League school. Given what you say here -- you have a shot if you can get an SAT score in the 2100+ range.

There is also Pennsylvania State University -- which is an excellent state school with a great engineering program. You will need a high SAT score to get in there, too -- but not as high as what you would need for U of Penn.

Assuming you get high SAT scores, you will be qualified to get into U of Penn -- but many qualified applicants are turned down.

You should know that engineering is one of the few fields where many of the top public universities have better programs than the private schools -- including the Ivies. Penn is a great university -- ranked in the top five undergraduate. But their engineering program is just OK. More than a dozen public universities have better engineering programs -- including Berkeley, Georgia Tech, Texas, Florida, and seven of the ten public schools in the Big Ten. In the Ivy League, Cornell, Harvard and Princeton have higher ranked engineering programs. Throw in private universities, and you will see Penn is also behind Duke, Northwestern, Stanford, Cal Tech, MIT, Carnegie Mellon and Rice.

In short -- you may want to rethink your strategy.
