I really need a 'makeup for dummies' handbook. Let's start with the basics though-- what foundations are the best? How do you use them? Any other foundation tips you feel like throwing out there are appreciated! Thanks!

There are a huge variety of foundations available - and I would agree that paying a little more does mean you get better product, although be aware that L'Oreal is made by the same people who make Lancome..

Some points to note, everyone has yellow based skin - some more yellow than others but NOONE has pink or red toned skin. Skin that is red is inflamed/irritated. Even the whitest or darkest people have yellow tones in their skin. Something to bear in mind when shopping for colours.
If your skin isn't too prone to breakouts then stick with a sheer coverage liquid - this way you will look natural and not cakey.
If you have oily skin I find a good tip is to dust powder over your skin before you apply foundation, this helps keep the shine at bay.
Use your foundation as your concealor by dotting it on problem redness.
Pay particular attention to dark skin underneath eyes, outer and inner eye corners and around nostrils - evening these areas out freshens up the whole face.

I'm using a lovely foundation from Models1 - very sheer but leaves a lovely glow and stays moist and fresh all day, I use MAC and Temptu professionally and I know that Clinique make some good shades. I prefer to apply my foundation with a 1/2" synthetic brush and always work outwards from my nose.

Hope this helps!

Here are some tips I can give you from my own experiences:

-Dont use drugstore brands- they are a waste of $$
If you want a good foundation- go for the high end names like
Clinique, Chanel, Lancolm, Clarins, Estee Lauder

-Go to the counter and ask someoen to help you figure out what type of skin you have. Then find the right foundation and color and even ask for a sample to bring home, to see if you really like it.

-I always mositurize before I apply my foundation. Also, if you want a more dewy look, I sometimes add just a little moisturizer to my foundation on my hand or sponge and apply.

-I try to use a makeup spong or a foundation brush to apply foundation. You can blend it better and apply it more evenly, and its more sanitary then using your fingers.

Hope this helped:)

An excellent foundation is Benefit's 'Some Kind of Gorgeous'.

It's easy to apply, as it comes with a sponge, and it comes in one shade that's suitable for all.

Well worth the money, as it makes your skin look perfect, stays put all day, and the packaging looks good.

Hope this helps!

go to CVS they have awsome foundation 4 the best prices. here's how u apply it:

put a bit (the size of a pea or smaller) and put a little of that around the area of whatever u're trying to cover up, then take another finger and spread it out around the area evenly, if it's obvious, then use a little blush to cover it up. and try to keep away from dry skin, or else it'll come up more obvious

I recommend checking out www.cosmeticscop.com. This site has make up application instructions with diagrams, product reviews and information about ingredients.

Choosing a good foundation is the trickiest thing in makeup. Each brand/line has it's strengths and weaknesses in terms of color selection and formulas for skin types. I suggest you take a look at www.makeupalley.com. It is a free consumer-to-consumer beauty product review site. You access reviews for many brands and formulas of foundations.

Hope this helps.

umm it all depends on what type of foundation you like and is best for your skin. I would recommend a cream foundation if you have normal skin that isnt oily or dried out. its not that hard to apply just go out and towards the hair line from your nose and then do downward strokes down your nose. its also very important to moisturized before you put on make up so that your pours wont get clogged up so easily

I would recommend you find a mary kay consultant in your area she can help you with makeup tips that are fit to your needs. The biggest difference between MK and the department stores is customer service. A consultant's job is to make her customers happy.

this is probly one of my favorite questions. hmm....i think CG Smoothers and CoverGirl are great foundations. and what u should do is, use makeup sticks 1st (like where the belmish is), and then cover it with foundation. it'll make u look great. just make sure u don't use too much otherwise u get gross zits and stuff...ewwwww....another thing is, to clean ur face, u should use Biore` and Noxzema. that'll really help keep ur face looking great.

Mary Kay has great foundation...but whatever brand you choose, it looks best if it matches your skin tone and you apply the liquid foundation, let it dry, and then brush on some powder foundation. It will set the makeup, give you a pretty finish and make it last longer!!
Check out http://www.marykay.com/mtravis2 that website has wonderful makeup tips!!!
