This can be caused by several factors. First, it is essentially part of aging and contributes to arthritis and bone spurs, etc. Also, calcium is not easily absorbed by our bodies anyway. If there is not a balance of other minerals such as magnesium and potassium to help the absorption of calcium, it may build up in different parts of the body. This is the cause of kidney stones as well.

Calcium buildups can be caused by a lack of vitamin D in the diet. In order for our bones to absorb calcium Vitamin D is required. If it isn't present then the calcium can build up in our bodys. Also there are rare disorders where the body just dosen't absorb calcium but isn't really efficient at getting rid if it. These are a result of a malfunction in the absorbtion or disposal pathway.

Our thyroids don't increase in number. We have two thyroid glands that produce thyroid hormone. It is increased production in this hormone that causes hyperthyroid issues. An increase in tyroid production is caused by on ommision of the molecule responsable for signaling "stop" to the thyroid gland. When the gland dosen't recieve the "stop" signal it continues to produce thyroid hormone at a rate greater than the body uses it and the numbers increase.

I think your are asking about increased calcium levels in the blood, there are many causes, among them:

Hyperparatyroidism, overproduction of parathyroid hormone by the parathyroid gland in the brain.

Certain medication like some diuretics, too much vitamin D or oral calcium

some cancers, breast, lung, paget's disease of the bone

hyperthyroidism- overproduction of thyroid hormone by the thyroid gland located in the neck. this in turn cause removal of calcium from the bone to the blood.

Kidney failure causes an indirect form of hyperparathyroidism and hypercalcemia

Soem inflammatory diseases like Sarcoidosis
which also causes renal failure.

The thyroid gland is in your neck and may overproduce or underproduce thyroid hormone. if diseased. Hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, respectively.

All these conditions need medical attention
