New York City has a population of millions and can easily support two baseball teams. In Kansas City where the population is much smaller, there aren't enough dollars to support two teams.

There is not enough demand for two teams in Kansas City. The population there is 441,545. New York City, on the other hand, has a population of 8,213,839. It is much harder to get from one side of NYC than it is for KC. Thus, demographics make it viable to have two teams in NYC, but not in KC.
